Pentateuch: a short outline
If I saw the word "Pentateuch" and knew nothing about God or the Bible, I would probably just stare at it for a few minutes and say, "What?" Well, to start of the word Pentateuch actually means "five-volumed" in Greek. This helps out a lot! It is actually the first five books of the Old Testament in the Bible. The Hebrew word for it is Torah which actually means "law" or "instruction," which helps out a lot too, because Genesis through Deuteronomy has many laws and it is really focused on instruction. A final translation of this word is "the books of Moses," you may have already guessed it, Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible! So now that I have gotten you up to date about what the word Pentateuch means, let's go a bit more in detail, shall we?
Glad you decided to keep going! Well, Let's start in the very beginning, it's a very good place to start :) Genesis
1. In the beginning God created.....the creation story!
2. The Fall-Adam and Eve the first humans sinned :(
3. There was a great Flood-Noah's family and every kind of animal were on Noah's ark.
4. The Tower of Babel- God made different languages so the people would go out and fill the nations.
5. God's Holy Covenant with Abraham-the Father of many Nations.
6. The very important lives of Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph!
There are many many events in Genesis and that is just a small snapshot. I won't spoil it for you, go read! :) There are also a lot of themes in Genesis including but not limited to: origin, sin, obedience, and disobedience.
Exodus-which means "going out" - Greek
1. Moses was born.
2. The Ten Plagues and the Passover.
3. The Exodus from Egypt.-God had Moses bring the people out of slavery from Egypt!
4. By a miracle from God they crossed the sea!
5. From there they went to Mount Sinai.
6. The Ten Commandments and other laws.
7. Idolatry
8. The Tabernacle.
None of this would have happened without God by Moses side. Moses was resistant at first because he didn't believe that God chose Him to do His work, for he was just a simple man that was not good at talking. That is why Moses's brother Aaron was also a major part of Exodus.
There were some major themes in the book of Exodus, which include but are not limited to; DISOBEDIENCE, IDOLATRY and most importantly I believe is DELIVERANCE!
God never gave up on the people of Israel, no matter how many times they messed up, there was never to be a great Flood again!
There are four major parts to the next book in the Pentateuch which is Leviticus
1. Offerings to God.
2. The Priests- ordination of Aaron and sons-death of Nadab and Abihu
3. Uncleanness
4. God's laws and regulations.
This is a pretty good basic outline of what was going on in Leviticus if I had only a few words to say about it.
Numbers comes next! Which has five major parts!
1. Israelites at Mt. Sinai.
2. In the desert at Paran.
3. Israelites wander in the desert for 40 years-yikes!
4. Conquest of Edom and Moab.
5. Preparation of conquest of Canaan.
Deuteronomy is the final book of the Pentateuch and has four major parts :)
1. Moses Recalls Events in the Desert and Trans-Jordan
2. Moses Restates the Decrees and Laws
3.Offer of Life or Death
4.Moses Transfers Leadership to Joshua
This first five books of the Bible are crucial to being a Christian, to know the stories that were from the very beginning!
God is so important and I will tell everyone in the world that He is Love and He is the light in the darkness. If you ever feel that you are all alone open up a Bible and read about His amazing life changing love and you will never fell alone again because you will know He is with you!
God Bless!!
